Rob Mackenzie was born and brought up in Glasgow, studied law at Aberdeen University and then theology at New College in Edinburgh. He spent a year at a seminary, also working with a congregation in Seoul, South Korea. He was ordained as a minister of the Church of Scotland in 1993 and, after 18 months as an assistant minister in South Queensferry, worked with churches in North Lanarkshire, Turin (Italy), the west of Edinburgh, and then Leith.
